Dr. Sylvia D. Watt, was born January 5, 1955 to the late Plummie Watt Jr. and Mattie Bell Watt in Grenada, MS. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Perry Montgomery. Later she joined Brown Chapel A.M.E. under the leadership of Dr. Betty J. Alston. Later she was a founding member of New Beginning Ministries (Dr. Betty J. Alston), where she became a Missionary. Later she joined Brown B.C. under the leadership of Pastor Bartholonew Orr.
In 1974, she graduated from Carrie Dotson High School. She went on to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing from Mississippi Valley State University, followed by a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Union University. She continued her career until retiring in 2023 from her career in nursing. Dr. Sylvia D. Watt was a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner with greater than 40 years of healthcare experience. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree in Public Health from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), and a Master of Science in Nursing Degree (FNP) from Arkansas State University. Her nursing career comprises combined years of service in various specialties across the health care spectrum.
She took great pride and found it rewarding to have devoted over half of her career to community outreach and health awareness initiatives. Utilizing her education, skills, and passion for health education, Dr. Watt played a major role in the successful implementation of the "We Can! How to prevent Childhood Obesity Program", a National Institutes of Health Initiative, in collaboration with UTHSC and New Beginning Ministries. Dr. Watt served as a Health Risk Assessment Nurse Practitioner with Medicare Advantage members who live in Memphis and Shelby County. She had a firm belief that the "holistic approach" in nursing is vital to the health and wellness of people within the community.
Dr. Watt was involved in Community Outreach. She was a cast member of "Portrait of a Sinner, Saved by Grace" play. She counseled the youth on the moral issues of illicit sex, drugs, and violence (Battered Women and Domestic Violence). She was a youth volunteer at New Beginning Counselling Center as a Big Sister. She supported the Union Mission Homeless Shelter, and Adopt-A-Child Program. She volunteered for the HIV Symposium sponsored by the Center of Disease Control and Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church. She coordinated and conducted Health Fairs in conjunction with the Urban Initiative and Memphis City Schools. She presented at local Churches and Schools.
She held Professional Memberships with the American College of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association, Tennessee Nurses Association, Greater Memphis Area Advanced Practice Nurses, and American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Board Certified Advanced Practice Nurse, and extensive nursing experience in Interventional Radiology.
She had Community Service Awards Recognition from the U.S. House Representative. She was named in best doctors, Memphis with the UT Medical Group, Sylvia Watt, Family Nurse Practitioner, RN, MSN, DNP, FNP-C, Interventional, Radiology, Memphis, Tennessee, TN,UTMG.
